¡Ay, Dios mío! ¡La Tailandia! And, specifically, the Sanae Oldtown Hotel. Alright, deep breaths. This itinerary might look pristine on paper, but trust me, it’s going to be a beautiful train wreck. I'm already sweating, and I haven't even left the airport yet.
Itinerario "Más o Menos" Sanae Oldtown - ¡A la Aventura!
Día 1: ¡Llegada y Choque Cultural (con un toque de jet lag)!
- 14:00 (aproximadamente): Aterrizaje en el Aeropuerto Suvarnabhumi (BKK). ¡Qué locura! La cantidad de gente, el calor, el olor a… ¡todo! I'd been dreaming of Pad Thai, not smelling like a damp gym bag after a marathon.
- 14:30 - 15:30: Cuestión de la maleta. ¡A sacarla! ¡Búsqueda interminable de un taxi! (Hint: learn the Thai word for "taxi"… or better yet, download the Grab app before you go. I didn't. Big mistake.) I end up negotiating with a guy who looked suspiciously like he might also moonlight as a snake charmer. We agree on a price that probably wasn’t daylight robbery, but who knows?

But already my head is pounding from the flight and the sheer sensory overload of it all. The reception girl with perfectly applied eyeliner is way too cheerful. I just want a cold towel and to be left alone.
- 17:00 - 18:00: Check-in (which takes approximately forever, because, paperwork in Thailand. Ugh). Room key acquired! Finally! The room is charming, with a teeny-tiny balcony.
- 18:00 - 19:00: The Great Food Hunt! Okay, time for the Pad Thai. I stumble out, looking like a zombie. I walk around the neighborhood, starving and bewildered. I somehow end up at a stall selling something that looked, at first glance, like deep fried… spiders. Almost fainted. Backtracked, and found a little place with the tastiest Pad Thai I’ve ever had. ¡Me lo comí todo, sin vergüenza! Even managed to figure out the "no spicy" hand signal. Success! Mostly.
- 19:00 - 21:00: Collapse in the room. Jet lag hits like a truck. Tried to stay awake to adjust, failed miserably. Slept, woke up, thought it was morning. Nope. Nightmare.
Día 2: Templos, Tuk-Tuks… y (Posiblemente) un Ataque de Pánico.
- 08:00 (ish): Wake up confused. Breakfast, which they sell at the hotel. ¡Qué bueno! Rice porridge, fruit and coffee that's stronger than my will to live. Seriously the coffee is addictive.
- 09:00 - 12:00: Temple Hopping. Grand Palace. Wat Arun. ¡Increíble! The gold! The colors! The sheer number of tourists! (Did I bring enough sunscreen? Probably not. Already feeling the burn). I got lost trying to find the exit from the Grand Palace. Ended up wandering into a garden where three monks silently judged me for my sweaty t-shirt. My bad.
- 12:00 - 13:00: Tuk-Tuk Adventure (or, The Near-Death Experience). Okay, this was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. Negotiating the price was even more stressful. "Five minutes to the temple?" Sure! "Five minutes" became a chaotic, honking, smog-filled twenty minutes. The driver kept yelling things at me in Thai. I just smiled and nodded. (I think I got ripped off).
- 13:00 - 14:00: Lunch. Found a cute little place at the river. Another amazing Pad Thai. I'm becoming a Pad Thai addict. ¡No puedo parar!
- 14:00 - 17:00: Exploring the side streets. Finding hidden murals. Smelling the various exotic cuisine that is being prepared. A little souvenir shopping. I found an adorable ceramic elephant. I may or may not have spent way too much money on it.
- 17:00 - 18:00: Rest and rehydrate at the hotel. Maybe take a nap. The heat is relentless. I'm pretty sure I'm slightly delirious at this point.
- 18:00 - 20:00: Night market exploration. ¡Ojo con los timos! I ate things I probably shouldn't have. I bartered aggressively for a fake designer watch. I think I won… or maybe the vendor let me win out of pity. Who knows.
- 20:00 on: Back to the hotel. More sleep. Dreaming of Pad Thai and electric tuk-tuks.
Día 3: Mercados Flotantes (¡Y la Pesadilla del Transporte!)
- 07:00: Wake up and realize that I have to be ready to go in the morning.
- 07:30 - 08:30: Early breakfast, ready to go.
- 09:00 - 12:00: Floating Market Frenzy (or, the Watery Chaos). Damnoen Saduak, here I come! This supposed to be a wonderful experience, but, the traffic was horrendous. I share a ride with a woman who was constantly yelling with her phone. I started to get a headache. It had its charm until I got a cramp and it was hard to get food from the boat.
- 12:00 - 13:00: Lunch at the market. The smells! The sights! The relentless boat traffic! I ate a grilled…something. I’m still not sure what it was. But delicious
- 13:00 - 15:00: More market mayhem, trying to find a way back to Bangkok.
- 15:00 - 17:00: Trying the bus back to Bangkok. A mistake. I spent most of the time in the bathroom. What's worse, the bus had no air conditioning, so what was a bad situation became a horrible one.
- 17:00 - 18:00: Get back to the hotel. ¡Necesito una ducha! And maybe counseling.
- 18:00: Dinner…if I can be bothered to leave the hotel.
Día 4: Relaxation and a Little Bit of "I'll Miss This Place"
- Morning: Sleep!
- Late Morning: Explore the hotel. The courtyard is gorgeous! Find shade. Read a book. People watch. Start to feel the slightest twinge of sadness that it's almost over.
- Afternoon: Massage! ¡Necesito uno con urgencia! Found a place nearby. It was the best one of my life. Melted into a puddle of bliss. Seriously, everyone should get a Thai massage, at least once.
- Evening: Last Pad Thai, walking around the neighborhood. Trying to memorize every single detail of the place. Thinking of new adventures.
Día 5: ¡Adiós y Hasta la Vista! (Or: The Departure, And My Promise to Come Back)
- Morning: Check out. Say goodbye to the amazing staff at the Sanae Oldtown. One last breakfast. One last look.

Ay, la gran pregunta... Mira, la verdad, depende. Literalmente, depende DEL DÍA. Un día te levantas y dices, ¡OMG, el paraíso! El otro... bueno, digamos que "espartano" es una descripción generosa. Vi el anuncio y pensé, "¡Guau, una joya escondida!". Y sí, es un poco escondida, pero "joya"... A veces sí, a veces no. Es como una caja de bombones, ¿sabes? Nunca sabes qué te va a tocar.
Lo que SÍ te puedo decir es esto: si buscas el Ritz-Carlton, olvídate. Si buscas autenticidad, carácter… y un toque de caos encantador… entonces sí, podría ser tu paraíso perdido. Personalmente, me encanta el caos. Me da algo que contar después.
¿Las habitaciones son... limpias? Eso es importante, ¿no?
Vale, hablemos de limpieza. ¡Un tema vital! En fin, la limpieza… digamos que tiene su propio ritmo. A veces, las habitaciones brillan, impecables, ¡casi da pena usarlas! Otras veces… Bueno, digamos que la palabra "hormiga" te viene a la mente. Literalmente, las hormigas, ¡pequeñas aventureras! Y la humedad… amiga, la humedad es una constante. Es Tailandia, ¿qué esperabas? Pero, oye, con un poco de repelente y una mente abierta, ¡se sobrevive! Nunca estuve gravemente enferma, si es lo que te preocupa. Todo estaba… *tolerable*. Pero una cosa te digo: no esperes la "limpieza quirúrjica" que ves en los anuncios. Piensa en ello como "limpieza con personalidad". Y sí, lleva tu propio desinfectante, ¡por si acaso!
¿Qué hay del desayuno? ¿Es algo que merezca la pena? Soy de buen comer...
¡Ah, el desayuno! Aquí es donde la cosa se pone… interesante. Me explico. Un día, el desayuno fue un festín: fruta fresca, pan recién horneado, huevos revueltos… ¡casi lloro de felicidad! Otro día… ¡Dios mío, la memoria me persigue!. Dos tostadas con ¿mermelada? que parecía melaza de motor, un plátano a punto de explotar y café aguado. ¡Aguado, literalmente! Y la camarera, con una sonrisa que decía: "O lo tomas, o te vas". (No hablaba español, por supuesto, pero el mensaje era claro).
Mi consejo: Ve con expectativas bajas y llévate un par de barritas energéticas. Así, si te sorprenden, ¡felicidad máxima! Si no… bueno, siempre hay puestos de comida callejera increíbles justo afuera, ¡eso es una ventaja! Y, ya que estoy, ¡prueba el mango sticky rice! (Pero no en el desayuno del hotel, créeme). Una vez, ¡una vez! intenté pedir un plato de fruta, pero me dieron una piña que parecía sacada de una película de terror. ¡Era como si me estuvieran gastando una broma! Pero, bueno, al menos tenía algo que contar.
¿Cómo es el ambiente? ¿Relax total o más fiesta?
A ver, el ambiente… no es ni lo uno ni lo otro. Digamos que es "lo que te toque". Hay días que es paz y tranquilidad absoluta. Te sientas en el balcón, con el sol pegando, el sonido de las campanas de los templos… Un auténtico remanso de paz. Otros, ¡parece que hay una convención de turistas! Gritos, risas, gente intentando regatear con los vendedores… ¡una locura!
La clave es la actitud. Si vas buscando paz, la encontrarás. Si te adaptas al caos, ¡te lo pasarás pipa! Yo, personalmente, prefiero el caos. Me aburro con la tranquilidad. Una vez, estaba en la zona común y se armó un jaleo impresionante porque un mono robó una bolsa de patatas fritas. ¡Literalmente! Fue épico. Fue el mejor rato de mi viaje. Pero claro, no es para todo el mundo. Si te asustan los monos, ¡cuidado! (Y no dejes comida a la vista).
¿El personal del hotel es amable? ¿Hablan inglés, al menos?
Mira, el personal… ¡aquí hay sorpresas! Algunos son amabilísimos, te atienden con una sonrisa, te ayudan en todo… ¡como ángeles! Otros… bueno, la comunicación es un poco… "rudimentaria". El inglés, digamos, es como el desayuno: varía. Algunos hablan bastante bien, otros… usar mímica es la clave.
Pero lo importante es la intención. Y créeme, la intención es buena. Te intentan ayudar, aunque no te entiendan. Una vez, intenté pedir una plancha y me trajeron… ¡un secador de pelo! Nos reímos un montón. La experiencia es lo que cuenta. Van a hacer lo posible para que te sientas a gusto. Eso sí, prepárate para la comunicación "creativa". ¡Aprender algunas frases básicas en tailandés ayuda muchísimo! Un "Sawasdee" (hola) y un "Khop Khun" (gracias) abren muchas puertas.
¿Hay wifi? ¡Porque necesito conectarme!
Ah, el wifi… el gran dilema del viajero moderno. Sí, hay wifi. En teoría. En la práctica… digamos que es más un "wifi intermitente". A veces va como un tiro, ¡puedes hasta ver Netflix! Otras… te desesperas. Es como la lotería: esperas y esperas, y a veces ganas.
Mi consejo: Compra una tarjeta SIM local con datos. Es mucho más fiable. Y si necesitas trabajar, ¡busca un café con wifi decente! Pero no dependas del wifi del hotel para nada importante. O te frustrarás. Una vez, tenía que enviar un email importante y… ¡nada! ¡Cero conexión! Casi me da algo. Pero al final… lo envié desde un cibercafé. ¡Aventura!
